1. Do Your Homework!
For headshots make sure you do your research and find out which photographer or studio you want to work with. Check out their portfolio; do they have a lot of experience with your skin and hair color? Do the pictures have the mood that you are looking for? What do other people say about working with them, do they get good reviews?
2. Know What Is Your Best Angle!
Creating your best headshot is a team effort. Don’t just depend on the photographer to figure out what your best angle is. Have a friend take some pictures of you and find out which angles work best for you. Make sure you get comfortable looking into the camera; actors spend most of their time looking past the camera so it can be quite confronting to stare straight into the lens. You want to know from which side you look your best and be totally comfortable when you get in front of the photographer! Don’t be afraid to ask during the shoot to see the pictures, (almost) everyone shoots digital now so make sure you don’t get disappointed after!
3. Take Time Choosing Your Wardrobe!
You want to wear something that makes you look great. Choose something that is comfortable; not too tight or loose fitting. Bring different options; different necklines will change the shape of your face. Avoid large logo’s, branding, stripes, busy patterns and white shirts. Layering is always a good idea. Choose something that you would normally wear.
4. Make Sure Its YOU!
Your headshot should look like you on your best day of the week. No glamour or character shots. If you decide to do your own make up; keep it natural. Casting directors have to recognize you when you walk into the audition. Avoid sparkly or shiny products.
Men might want to wear some base and concealer; make sure you bring you own so it matches your skin color. If you are totally lost in the world of make up, just ask the sales person they can help you choose.
5. It Is All About The Eyes!
Your photo has to sell your personality. Capture the camera with your eyes, they are the windows to the soul. This is where the change in expression comes from. Play with having different thoughts and expressions. Practice this in front of the mirror at home.
And, most importantly, have fun at your headshot shoot!
